On Thursday November 7, I was travelling on Ghodbunder Road (from Hiranandani Estate towards Hiranandani Meadows). The car was driven by my driver and I sat alongside him.
At approximately 19:45 hours, my car passed through the traffic signal at Bramhand (Patlipada). We crossed the signal while it was Green and even after we passed, I noticed that the Amber timer showed additional four second countdown. There is no doubt in my mind that we did not jump the Red signal.
Immediately after crossing, a posse of policemen asked us to stop the car and started photographing the car registration plate. When I questioned the reason for stopping my car, I was told that we had jumped the Red signal. Our conversation went like this.
I: Kay zaley saheb? (What happened, Sir?)
Policeman: Tumhi lal light madhe cross kelay (You have jumped the Red signal)
I: Mee driver chya barobar balso hoto ani khatrinay sangto ki tyani Red signal madhe cross kelay nahi (I was sitting next to the driver and I am telling you with certainty that he did not jump the Red signal)
Policeman: Mhanjay amhi kho boltoy? (Are you saying that police is lying?)
I: Mee tase mhanat nahi, pann mee dehil khotay bolat nahi. Tumchi chook zali aahey. (I’m not saying that you lied but I’m not lying either. You have made a mistake)
Policeman: Mag jaa (Then go)
I thought that was the end of it but I now have a Challan number TNCCM19007057542 for Rs 200 showing up against my car. In the ‘Evidences’ cell is a hyperlink to a photo which was taken after we were stopped and when the car was stationary. That Sir, is hardly ‘Evidence’
I dispute this Challan and will not pay the fine. Please let me know what the procedure is to dispute the fine legally.
What is the point in having a regimen of traffic offence fines when it is only the policeman’s word against mine and I have no means to dispute it?
